Baklava Puffy Pies

With this little hack, you can make these easy ‘fake’ baklava puffy pies, the perfect Ramadan-style dessert. Dates make these pies super nutrient-rich, and you can enjoy it with pistachios and chocolate sauces on top for the most incredible taste experience.

THE DATES & WALNUTS FILLING

The most important step of the recipe is making delicious filling! To make it to perfection these baklava puffy pies have three very important components:

  1. Need to have soaked dates in milk and these dates should be soft and easy to mash (like Medjoul dates)
  2. Ground walnuts with cinnamon
  3. Chopped dark chocolate

Here’s are ingredients you will need:

  • Medjoul dates
  • milk
  • walnuts
  • cinnanom
  • dark chocolate
  • rose water/vanilla extract
  • salt

Wash dates thoughtfully and remove all the pits one by one. Unpitted and clean dates transfer into a medium bowl, pour warm milk over the dates and then soak for a few minutes. Then mash softened dates to smooth paste. Add walnuts, cinnamon, rose water, salt and milk if required. Mix everything together to soft consistent filling.

ASSEMBLY & BAKING

Now it’s time to work with puff pastry. Make sure to defrost the pastry according to package directions. Unwrap the pastry roll the sheet onto your working surface and divide into equal 8 squares.

Add date filling along one side of the square and fold over to make a triangle baklava shape. Pinch the edges with a fork to seal the pastry tightly. Make one small little cut on top of the pastry and go ahead and bake.

Pop into preheated oven and bake for about 30 minutes at 160 C. Take out of the oven, and allow to cool down for about 10 minutes before decorating!

Meanwhile, melt white and dark chocolate in a microwave oven. Once melted stir hot milk into it, mix well until everything is well combined. Insert melted chocolate into piping bags and decorate!

Pipe white and dark chocolate all over the pastry, and sprinkle with pistachios and rose petals. Enjoy warm and fresh!
